Chain-Reaction Truck and Police-Cruiser Crash on Highway 79

Day of the Dead

The Chain-Reaction Truck and Police-Cruiser Crash on Highway 79 is a sudden interruption in the pursuit of Larry Stryker. A yellow Honda turning across a loaded gravel truck’s path forces the truck driver into a split-second choice; the ensuing collision sends the Honda off the road, overturns the truck, and drives Brian Fellows and PeeWee Segura’s cruiser into a bridge abutment. The crash leaves the Honda’s driver critically injured but alive, while Brandon Walker’s view of Gayle Stryker’s Lexus adds a new question to the scene: why is she approaching Flying C Ranch Road from the north?

The Approach to Oracle Junction

As the sequence begins, Brian Fellows and PeeWee Segura are driving in pursuit without wanting to alert Larry Stryker. Brian has shut off the cruiser’s siren as they enter Oracle Junction. On Highway 79, he sees a gravel truck coming toward them and a small yellow Honda ahead of it. When the Honda’s brake lights come on, Brian assumes it may be preparing to turn. The lack of a turn signal gives him no clear warning about which direction it will go.

The truck driver, Amos Brubaker, is nearing the end of a straight stretch where the road narrows and becomes more winding. He sees the Honda approaching in the opposite lane but does not initially treat it as a danger; he assumes its driver sees the bright red truck. The change comes almost at once: the Honda turns left directly in front of the truck. Brubaker sees its driver, a gray-haired woman, look up at the last moment.

The Collision and Its Chain Reaction

With the Honda in front of him, Brubaker looks for a way to avoid it and sees the police cruiser speeding toward both vehicles in the left lane. He has only seconds to choose between striking the Honda broadside and colliding head-on with the cruiser. He steers and brakes, but the loaded truck cannot simply stop. Instead of hitting the Honda squarely, he clips its right rear quarter. The impact sends the car spinning onto the soft shoulder, where it flips and comes to rest at an angle against a barbed-wire fence.

For a moment, Brubaker thinks he has avoided the worst. Then the trailer swings back across the centerline. Its heavy load pulls the truck over, and the tractor and trailer overturn. Brian sees the Honda turn into the truck’s path and understands that there is no way for him to stop the collision. He steers right to avoid the tumbling car and a tire bouncing above the roadway, but the maneuver sends the Crown Victoria down the steep shoulder into a concrete bridge abutment.

Brian’s view is briefly blocked by the deployed air bag. When he can see again, the gravel truck and trailer are sliding on their sides across both lanes, scattering gravel and raising dust. The cruiser’s doors are jammed, so Brian and PeeWee cannot get out through them. They force their way through the shattered windshield instead. PeeWee stays behind to radio for help while Brian climbs out.

Rescue at the Honda

The truck has come to rest on its side, and Brubaker gets out through a window. Rather than leaving the wreckage, he runs toward the Honda, which lies at the bottom of a steep wash beside the fence. Brian reaches the vehicle as Brubaker tries its driver-side door. Looking through the window, Brian sees the woman slumped against the door and apparently unresponsive. The door will not open.

Brubaker goes around the far side, climbs over the fence, and pushes the Honda until it tips back onto its remaining tires. He then forces open the passenger door, allowing Brian to reach the woman. Brian finds a weak, fast pulse. Her survival is not assured, but she is alive. He calls to PeeWee to request a medevac helicopter. At the edge of the crash scene, Brubaker drops to his knees, pale and weak, after helping to free her.

The Pursuit’s Unsettled Aftermath

The crash occurs amid a pursuit, but the evidence here does not establish what happens to Larry Stryker during the immediate rescue. Brian and PeeWee’s attention turns to the Honda’s injured driver and the need for emergency assistance. The sequence thus shifts the urgent stakes from pursuit to rescue: the officers must respond to a danger they could neither predict nor prevent, and the truck driver becomes an essential helper at the wreck.

Brandon Walker, parked on the shoulder, sees the gravel truck bearing down from behind and another car pass it. He loses sight of that car until the truck brakes as it approaches a vehicle slowing to turn onto Flying C Ranch Road. Then he recognizes the car as Gayle Stryker’s Lexus and notices that she has come from the north. The crash itself does not explain her route, but this final observation places her on the road near the pursuit and leaves Brandon with a consequential question. The wreck is therefore both a physical crisis and a break in the chase, ending on a clue whose meaning is still unresolved.
